Preventing a hard drive from spinning down means disabling its built-in sleep or standby mode. This keeps the physical magnetic platters spinning at full operating speed.

When a hard drive sleeps, your computer stutters for a few seconds to let the motor “spin up” when you try to open a folder. Keeping it active eliminates this lag. It also prevents the excessive mechanical wear caused by constant stop-and-start cycles.

Method 1: Change Windows Power Options (Best for Internal Drives)

Windows includes a native setting that manages hard disk power. By default, it forces drives to go to sleep after 20 minutes of inactivity.
